Air Products Signs Long-Term Supply Contract with National Helium
Tuesday May 8th 2012 12:09:00 PM

LEHIGH VALLEY, Pa. (May 8, 2012) – Air Products (NYSE: APD), the global leader in helium production, today announced the signing of a long-term helium supply contract with National Helium LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of DCP Midstream. The feedstock from National Helium provides the base-load helium volume for Air Products’ liquid helium plant located near Liberal, Kansas, one of the largest helium purification and liquefaction plants in the world. The Liberal facility, which is also connected to the United States Bureau of Land Management pipeline system, is also the home of a major Air Products helium distribution terminal.

“We have had a long and productive relationship with National Helium and are pleased to extend it for another very lengthy period of time,” said John Van Sloun, general manager - Worldwide Helium at Air Products. “This is a key supply contract for Air Products as we strive to ensure our ability to reliably serve our customer base. At the same time, Air Products continues to look for other helium source opportunities where we can participate both as an investor and an operator.” Air Products is also supplied with helium feedstock from DCP Midstream at its Hansford County, Texas liquid helium plant.

Air Products has pioneered many of the helium extraction, production, distribution and storage technologies used in the industry today. Air Products maintains the world’s largest helium production and distribution system and operates numerous facilities around the world.

Van Sloun also indicated that Air Products’ new, jointly-owned with MATHESON, liquid helium production plant near Big Piney, Wyoming is to be onstream later this year. The Wyoming helium production plant will be the 10th liquid helium plant operating in the United States, and the first new U.S. facility constructed in over a decade. The Wyoming plant is designed to produce 200 million standard cubic feet per year at start-up, with expectations for future expansion to 400 million. The facility will process natural gas from the Riley Ridge Field in Wyoming, one of the largest helium-rich natural gas fields in the U.S. The Riley Ridge field is believed to contain sufficient reserves to support helium production for decades.

Helium is used in many unique and valued applications including: magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); lifting for high altitude scientific research balloons, blimps and party balloons; fiber optics and semi-conductor manufacturing; metallurgy; breathing atmospheres for deep diving or unique blood gas medical mixtures; analytical chemistry; pressurizing and purging pipes, vessels, and other critical equipment; leak detection; and other advanced applications.

Air Products Introduces New Environmentally Friendly Superwetting Surfactants and Pigment Dispersant for Aqueous Coatings Applications
Monday May 7th 2012 02:30:00 PM

LEHIGH VALLEY, Pa. (May 7, 2012) – Air Products (NYSE:APD) today has introduced two new superwetting surfactants and one new pigment dispersant for use in the coatings industry. These new alkylphenol ethoxylate (APE) free surfactants are designed to deliver improved value and superior performance versus competing products.

Both Dynol™ 800 and 810 surfactants were engineered to eliminate defects on difficult-to-coat substrates. They can offer superior performance versus silicones and fluorosurfactants with the environmental benefit of zero APEs, VOCs, HAPs, or solvents. Dynol 800 surfactant offers especially improved performance in wood and plastic coatings, while Dynol 810 surfactant enables exceptional performance in printing inks and overprint varnishes. Both products can provide premium surface tension reduction while helping to control foam and are easy to handle and formulate.

Zetasperse® 3600 dispersing additive was developed for broad utility across typical organic and carbon black pigments and has shown robust performance with globally sourced pigment grades. Designed as a multifunctional dispersant, it can not only provide exceptional pigment dispersion and stabilization, but can also be used as a grind aid for aqueous architectural coatings, colorants, and inks. Zetsperse 3600 dispersing additive is an effective and cost-efficient dispersant designed to simplify formulations while reducing manufacturers’ need for complex formulation optimization.

“Air Products’ experience in surface science continues to drive innovative and environmentally conscientious solutions for our coatings customers,” said Solomon Lemma, global business manager, Specialty Additives and Personal Care, for Air Products. “These new additives for the coatings industry can provide improved performance while eliminating or significantly reducing pollutants such as APEs and VOCs.”

Air Products erweitert Angebot an Einwegflaschen für Spezialgase
Thursday May 3rd 2012 03:04:00 PM

+49(0)152 22781923.

Air Products Supplying Additional Hydrogen Required by Motiva from Gulf Coast Pipeline Asset
Wednesday May 2nd 2012 12:00:00 AM

For the second time in less than a year Air Products (NYSE: APD), the leading global hydrogen provider, is announcing it will supply additional hydrogen to be used by Motiva’s Convent, Louisiana refinery under a long-term agreement with Motiva Enterprises LLC. The significant amount of additional hydrogen to be supplied will come from Air Products’ industry-leading Gulf Coast hydrogen pipeline supply network serving multiple refinery and petrochemical operations in the region. Similar to the previous August 2011 agreement between the companies, the new contract allows the direction of some of the hydrogen product supplied to Motiva’s Convent Refinery to go to other Motiva refineries along Air Products’ pipeline network in both Texas and Louisiana.

“Our initial hydrogen supply to Motiva’s Convent facility goes back many years and we are pleased to expand this working relationship with this additional agreement. This is the second instance with Motiva in which the flexibility in hydrogen supply options available with our Texas and Louisiana hydrogen pipeline created added value. We believe the connection of our Texas and Louisiana pipelines into one system will be an asset for the refinery and petrochemical industries along our Gulf Coast hydrogen franchise,” said Wilbur Mok, vice president - North America Tonnage Gases at Air Products.

Currently, Air Products operates hydrogen pipelines in both Texas and Louisiana. Work is underway to connect the two hydrogen systems with a new 180 mile span to make it the world’s largest hydrogen plant and pipeline supply network. Once complete, Air Products’ hydrogen pipeline supply network will stretch from the Houston Ship Channel in Texas to New Orleans. This integrated pipeline system will unite over 20 hydrogen plants and over 600 miles of pipelines. It will supply the Louisiana and Texas refinery and petrochemical industries with over 1.2 billion cubic feet of hydrogen per day. The new Gulf Coast hydrogen pipeline network is to be operational in 2012.

Globally, Air Products’ hydrogen pipeline operational expertise is evidenced by the 40 year safe operation of its network of systems. Pipelines offer a safe, robust and reliable supply of hydrogen to the refinery and petrochemical industry around the world. In addition to the Gulf Coast hydrogen pipeline system, Air Products also has hydrogen pipeline networks operating around the world in the U.S. in Southern California; in Canada in Sarnia, Ontario, and Edmonton, Alberta; and in The Netherlands in Rotterdam.

Hydrogen is widely used in petroleum refining processes to remove impurities found in crude oil such as sulfur, olefins and aromatics to meet the product fuels specifications. Removing these components allows gasoline and diesel to burn cleaner and thus makes hydrogen a critical component in the production of cleaner fuels needed by modern, efficient internal combustion engines.

Air Products Strengthens China Presence with New Office in Xi’an
Thursday April 26th 2012 12:00:00 AM

Air Products (NYSE:APD) today announced the opening of a new office in Xi’an High Tech Zone, Shaanxi Province, Western China. The new office is part of Air Products’ strategy to accelerate its growth in the China market.

The Xi’an office will lead Air Products’ business growth in Shaanxi Province and other areas to meet growing demand for industrial gases from fast developing industries including energy, chemicals, electronics, new materials and fabrications in the region.

The new office―to be built as another Air Products world-class engineering office―will provide additional resources to support the company’s increasing number of projects in China and other parts of the world, and will work closely with Air Products’ global engineering teams in Shanghai, U.K. and U.S. Air Products has already established engineering capabilities, a cryogenic equipment manufacturing center, and a strategic sourcing center in China to build state-of-the art, energy- and cost-effective air separation equipment from design through sourcing to manufacturing for its local and global customers.

“China is an important market for Air Products,” said Stephen J. Jones, senior vice president and general manager, Tonnage Gases, Equipment and Energy, and China president, Air Products. “Western China is an emerging and fast-growing region in China, and we have already signed a number of new customers in the region. The opening of our office in Xi’an, capital of Shaanxi, is a strategic move to speed up our growth. It underscores our strong commitment to support the development of the China market and China’s 12th Five Year Plan.”

Air Products first entered Shaanxi province in 2006 to serve the electronics industry. The company has continued to invest in the Province by constructing and operating a state-of-the-art large air separation unit (ASU) and is currently building another seven large ASUs to serve local customers under long-term contracts. One of those contracts, signed in 2011 with Shaanxi Future Energy Chemical Corp, is the largest single on-site ASU order ever awarded to an industrial gas company. It calls for multiple ASU trains producing 12,000 tons per day (tpd) of oxygen and tonnage-level nitrogen and compressed dry air. The liquid products produced by the large ASUs will serve the growing regional merchant market.

The company has recently established a scholarship program with Xi’an Jiatong University and has been working with other universities and design institutes to study and develop applications for electronics, energy, cryogenics and other markets.

Air Products has been operating in China since 1987 and was one of the first multinational industrial gas corporations to invest in the country. With over 40 operating entities, 50 production facilities, and 2,400 employees, the company has already established a strong market position in China, serving a broad range of industries.

Air Products to Feature PolarFit™ Cryogenic Solutions to Help Processors Lower Operating Costs and Increase Productivity at PTXi 2012 Expo
Thursday April 26th 2012 12:00:00 AM

Air Products (NYSE:APD) will feature its PolarFit™ cryogenic solutions for cryogenic grinding, cryogenic deflashing, process cooling and inerting applications at PTXi 2012 Expo in Rosemont (Chicago), Ill., from May 8-10. The company’s portfolio of industrial-gas based technologies and process improvement solutions can help processors maximize production rates; minimize costs; improve product quality, safety and efficiency; and achieve finer, more uniform particles.

Air Products’ range of offerings includes the PolarFit™ ultra-fine-grinding mill, which cost-effectively reduces hard-to-grind materials to smaller particle sizes than can be achieved with conventional impact mills. This unique grinding system uses a combination of size reduction mechanisms—including impact, attrition and particle-particle collision—to generate consistent yields of particles between 45 and 240 microns, and in some cases as small as 10 microns. Through its efficient use of liquid nitrogen to remove heat from the grinding process, the Air Products mill provides ultra-fine to coarse particle sizes, more uniform particle distribution, higher yields of particles in target range, improved product quality due to minimal or no heat damage, less recycling, and lower production costs. For more information, visit www.airproducts.com/ultrafine.

With a state-of-the-art lab in Allentown, Pa., Air Products can test a manufacturer’s product on production-scale equipment to help determine the feasibility of using cryogenics in their process, as well as to help quantify the benefits versus cost. For manufacturers who want to evaluate their cryogenic deflashing or grinding processes, the lab provides access to the latest in testing equipment and services that can help them improve throughput, enhance quality, and reduce capital and operating expenditures.

Air Products researchers also will present a Particle Technology In-Practice Workshop, “Fundamentals of Grinding Polymers,” on May 8 from 2–4 p.m. Processors attending the workshop will discover the range of utility when grinding at cryogenic temperatures as presenters discuss the physical properties of polymers, the pulverizing machines used to grind polymers, and the prediction of their performance.

Air Products Again Named a Climate Innovation Leader by Maplecroft
Wednesday April 25th 2012 12:00:00 AM

For the third consecutive year, Air Products (NYSE:APD) is a Maplecroft Climate Innovation Indexes (CIIs) Leader. For 2012, Air Products ranked seventh overall and as the leading industrial gas company among the 360 largest U.S. companies evaluated for their climate-related innovation and carbon management programs.

Launched in January 2010, The Maplecroft CIIs are calculated by Bloomberg and based on evaluations by global analysis firm, Maplecroft. For this year’s ranking, approximately 1,300 U.S. publicly traded companies with a free-float market capitalization of more than US $1 billion was narrowed to an eligible pool of benchmark organizations engaged in public climate-related programs. From this subset, Maplecroft selected 100 CII Leaders by evaluating over 100 performance criteria across five major climate innovation categories: management systems, mitigation of emissions, emissions reductions, adaptation and innovation. The innovation category, with a focus on disruptive technologies and initiatives to capitalize on climate-related opportunities, accounted for 50 percent of the companies’ final scores.

Wynika to najprawdopodobniej z faktu, że robocizna i koszty kapitałowe stanowią niekiedy nawet ponad 90% kosztów spawania ręcznego i mechanicznego, natomiast cena samych gazów spawalniczych stanowi zaledwie parę procent całkowitej sumy.

Air Products Reports Fiscal Q2 Financial Results
Tuesday April 24th 2012 12:00:00 AM

Second Quarter Summary

  • Non-GAAP adjusted EPS of $1.39* within previous guidance range
  • Non-GAAP adjusted EPS from continuing operations of $1.31* up 4% versus prior quarter
  • Cost reduction actions drive charge of $60 million after tax
  • Quarterly dividend increased for 30th consecutive year
  • Capital spending expectation of $2.2 billion at high end of range with new project success

Air Products (NYSE:APD) today reported net income of $281 million* and diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $1.31* on a non-GAAP, continuing operations basis, for its fiscal second quarter ended March 31, 2012. This excludes: a $0.28 per share charge for cost reduction actions, mostly in Europe; a $0.27 per share tax benefit resulting from a non-cash Spanish tax ruling; and $0.08 per share of earnings from the Homecare Business, which has been reclassified to discontinued operations.

The discussion of second quarter results and guidance in this release is based on non-GAAP continuing operations comparisons that exclude these items. A reconciliation can be found at the end of this release.*

Second quarter revenues of $2,344 million decreased two percent versus prior year, primarily on lower energy pass-through and a stronger dollar. Underlying sales were up two percent on higher Tonnage Gases volumes and improved pricing in Merchant Gases. Operating income of $375 million was down six percent and operating margin of 16% decreased 60 basis points versus prior year, primarily due to volume mix between the businesses.

Sequentially, sales increased one percent, with underlying sales up 3%, primarily due to increased volumes in Performance Materials and Equipment. Operating income was up six percent and operating margin increased 80 basis points, mainly due to higher Performance Materials and Tonnage Gases volumes.

Commenting on the quarter, John McGlade, chairman, president and chief executive officer, said, "Overall, second quarter volumes were below our expectations, as business activity did not pick up as much as we expected. With Europe in recession, we have taken actions to improve our business portfolio and cost positions. While our volumes were held down by lower demand, we did see positive impact from our pricing efforts and new plants.”

Second Quarter Segment Performance

  • Merchant Gases sales of $884 million decreased three percent and operating income of $153 million declined eight percent versus prior year, with positive pricing offset by weaker volumes in all regions and currency impacts.
  • Tonnage Gases sales of $784 million decreased two percent versus the prior year, with lower energy pass-through, mostly offset by improved volumes of seven percent. Operating income of $125 million was up four percent from the prior year driven by the volume growth.
  • Electronics and Performance Materials sales of $567 million declined two percent versus the prior year, primarily due to weaker Electronics volumes, partially offset by stronger Performance Materials volumes. Operating income of $86 million was down seven percent versus prior year, primarily due to lower volumes and higher raw material costs in Electronics. These were partially offset by higher Performance Materials volumes.
  • Equipment and Energy sales of $110 million were down three percent versus prior year due to lower project activity. Operating income of $10 million declined 56 percent from the prior year on lower LNG activity. Equipment sales backlog is up 69 percent versus prior year.

Outlook

Looking ahead, McGlade said, “We are entering the second half of the year at lower levels of business activity than originally anticipated, reducing growth in both sales and earnings for fiscal 2012. We still expect both to pick up during the second half of 2012 and into 2013. Our capital spending for this year is anticipated to come in at the high end of our range at approximately $2.2 billion. We expect to sign a record amount of new business this year and to continue to deliver gains in productivity that will contribute to strong, profitable growth.”

Air Products expects third quarter adjusted EPS from continuing operations to be between $1.40 and $1.45 per share. The company’s adjusted guidance for continuing operations for fiscal 2012 is $5.47 to $5.60 per share. This includes a $0.30 per share reduction for the movement of Homecare to discontinued operations.

Ursachen für Wissenslücken liegen u.a. in "kurzsichtiger" Kostenbetrachtung

Safety First

Air Products Wins Technology Selection for Ichthys LNG Project in Australia
Monday April 23rd 2012 12:00:00 AM

Air Products (NYSE: APD), the leader in providing liquefied natural gas (LNG) technology and equipment to the world, is again increasing its presence in Australia’s rapidly growing LNG production market. Air Products has signed an agreement with JKC Joint Venture (JV) and INPEX Operations Australia Pty Ltd, for the supply of the liquefaction technology and main cryogenic heat exchangers for two process trains that will produce a total of 8.4 million tons of LNG per year. Air Products’ LNG heat exchanger technology will operate in Darwin, Australia as part of the Ichthys LNG Project (INPEX 76% Operator; Total 24%), expected to be onstream by the end of 2016.

“This project extends our presence in Australia, which is the most active area in the world right now in LNG project development. If the pace of activity continues, before too long Australia may be able to lay claim to the title of the world’s largest exporter of LNG,” said Jim Solomon, director – LNG at Air Products. “Spurring this growth is the fact that natural gas usage is increasing in importance on a worldwide basis as a source of clean energy. As a result, Air Products is seeing increased project activity globally, and we see the projected growth for LNG continuing over the next decade.”

Under the agreement with JKC and INPEX, Air Products will provide two main cryogenic heat exchangers with a proprietary propane pre-cooled mixed refrigerant process using the SplitMR® machinery configuration to produce the LNG. The LNG units will process natural gas from the substantial reserves located in the Browse Basin offshore Western Australia. The Ichthys LNG Project is a joint venture between INPEX as operator and Total. The project will provide crucial long term energy supply to Japan and other customers.

JKC Joint Venture is a JV comprising JGC Corporation, KBR and Chiyoda Corporation. INPEX Operations Australia Pty Ltd is acting as agent for and on behalf of Ichthys LNG Pty Ltd.

This is Air Products’ second Australian LNG project announcement in the past year. In 2011, Air Products was selected to supply its proprietary cryogenic coil wound LNG heat exchangers for what is the world’s first sanctioned Floating LNG (FLNG) facility being developed for the Shell Prelude FLNG Project, also to be located in the Browse Basin off the northwest coast of Western Australia. INPEX is a 17.5 percent participant in the Prelude FLNG Project as well.

Air Products is also providing its proprietary LNG process technology and equipment for three process trains producing up to 15 million tons of LNG per annum at the Gorgon Project, currently under construction on Barrow Island off the coast of Western Australia.

Air Products’ involvement in LNG projects in Australia dates back to the late 1980s when the company was selected to provide it’s propane pre-cooled mixed refrigerant process and MCR® cryogenic heat exchangers for the first three trains at the North West Shelf Venture LNG Project, Australia’s first LNG project.

A majority of the total worldwide LNG is produced with Air Products’ technology. Air Products has designed, manufactured and exported over 90 coil wound heat exchangers for LNG projects in 15 countries from its Wilkes-Barre, Pa., United States facility over the last four decades. In support of the LNG industry, Air Products provides process technology and key equipment for the heart of the natural gas liquefaction process, and also nitrogen plants for the base-load LNG facility, as well as process technology and equipment for small and mid-sized LNG plants, floating LNG plants and LNG peak shavers. Upstream, Air Products provides both nitrogen and natural gas dehydration membrane systems for offshore platforms. Downstream, Air Products provides dry inert gas generators for LNG carriers, shipboard membrane nitrogen systems, and land-based membrane and cryogenic nitrogen systems for LNG import terminals.

Air Products (NYSE:APD) provides atmospheric, process and specialty gases; performance materials; equipment; and technology. For over 70 years, the company has enabled customers to become more productive, energy efficient and sustainable. More than 18,000 employees in over 40 countries supply innovative solutions to the energy, environment and emerging markets. Air Products Highlights Productivity and Quality Benefits of Freshline® Solutions for Meat Processors at AMI Expo
Thursday April 19th 2012 12:00:00 AM

Air Products’ (NYSE:APD) Freshline® solutions can help meat processors improve productivity, increase product yield, and lower costs while producing high-quality products. The company will highlight its portfolio of technology and equipment for freezing, chilling, mixing, forming, and more at this year’s AMI Expo in Dallas, Tex., from May 1-3.

Among the company’s featured offerings are Freshline® LIN-IS, a specially designed liquid nitrogen (LIN) injection solution that can be retrofitted to new or existing mixers, grinders, and blenders for fast, consistent, and repeatable cooling; the Freshline® DM tunnel freezer, which allows manufacturers to process both IQF (individually quick frozen) and flat or trayed products in a single machine; and the Freshline® QS tunnel freezer, an economical and easy-to-operate option for food processors who want to convert to continuous freezing, alleviate a bottleneck in their operation, or grow and diversify their existing product line.

Air Products’ portfolio of Freshline solutions includes cryogenic food processing equipment that uses LIN to rapidly chill, cool, or freeze a high-quality product. Accounting for more than three-quarters of the earth’s atmosphere, nitrogen is plentiful, making it a reliable alternative to carbon dioxide (CO2), which experiences regular, seasonal supply shortages.

In many freezing and chilling applications, LIN can be a cost-effective alternative to CO2, and the conversion can be quick and easy. Air Products has successfully converted many customers from CO2 to LIN, providing them with a multitude of quality and operational benefits that cannot be achieved with CO2. These benefits include a uniform temperature throughout the cooling or freezing process, superior product quality, increased throughput, and better turn-down.

As part of AMI’s Meat Tech sessions, Chris Johnson, marketing manager for North America Foods at Air Products, will discuss “Why Use Liquid Nitrogen in the Meat Industry?” on Wednesday, May 2, at 3:00 p.m. at booth #1625. Manufacturers attending this presentation will discover the many operational and quality benefits that can be achieved by using liquid nitrogen in their meat processing applications.

Johnson, along with other Air Products food specialists, also will be available throughout the show at the company’s booth #2221 to speak with food processors about how Air Products’ Freshline solutions can bring economic and product quality benefits to their specific operation.

Air Products has been providing the food industry with solutions for freezing, chilling, coating, mixing, forming, packaging, and wastewater treatment for more than 40 years. With state-of-the-art, fully-equipped food laboratories in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, Air Products can test a customer’s product to determine the feasibility of using the company’s Freshline solutions for their specific process. Air Products is Celebrating 50 Years of Supplying Dabco Catalysts and Will Be Launching a New Generation of Non-Emission Catalysts
Wednesday April 4th 2012 12:00:00 AM

Across the globe, manufacturers of polyurethane (PU) materials are demanding increasingly innovative additives that are capable of producing high quality foam with reduced environmental emissions.

Designed for use in the automotive and flexible slabstock sectors, Air Products has been leading the way in the development of new generation low emission non-fugitive catalysts.

Steve Hulme, Global Marketing Manager PU Chemicals at Air Products, said: "When developing low emission catalysts, the biggest challenge has been to fulfil the physical property standards of flexible foams used in automotive seating, in particular to meet properties after humid aging of the foam."

According to Air Products, demand for non-emission catalyst technology has spread globally in the past decade and this is expected to continue. Steve Hulme added: "Initial interest in non-fugitive catalyst technology came from the European automotive industry, but this has since spread to flexible stabstock and rigid foams. We are now seeing an increased demand for this advanced technology from furniture and bedding producers in Asia, for example, which are supplying markets in the EU and US."

In Europe, Air Products is launching two next generation non-emission catalysts at UTECH 2012, Dabco® NE1090 and Dabco BA305. Both these new products have been designed specifically to produce non-emission molded TDI foam that can meet the humid age specification that is required by automotive OEMs. "The technology will close a gap that foam manufacturers have been looking for since many years", added Steve Hulme, "and will be another milestone in 50 years of Air Products´ catalyst developments for the polyurethane industry". New catalysts and surfactants for rigid and flexible foam applications will also be showcased.

Air Products obtained the Dabco business and patent rights when it acquired the Houdry Process Corporation in 1962 and so will be celebrating 50 years of supplying innovative products to the PU industry at Utech 2012.

Air Products manufactures a variety of additives, intermediates and prepolymers for use in the polyurethane industry. These products are widely used in automotive, bedding, furniture, appliance, construction, shoe and many other industries. For more information please visit www.airproducts.com/Polyurethane.

Air Products Completes Acquisition of DuPont’s Stake in DuPont Air Products NanoMaterials LLC JV
Tuesday April 3rd 2012 12:00:00 AM

Air Products (NYSE:APD) today announced it had completed the acquisition of DuPont’s interest in DuPont Air Products NanoMaterials LLC (DA NanoMaterials), the two companies’ 50-50 joint venture serving the global semiconductor and wafer polishing industries. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

DA NanoMaterials manufactures chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) slurries for the semiconductor and wafer polishing industries. Headquartered in Tempe, Ariz., with regional headquarters in Hsinchu County, Taiwan, the company operates state-of-the-art applications and formulation laboratories in Tempe and Taiwan. DA NanoMaterials has established a portfolio of products for copper CMP, tungsten CMP, shallow trench isolation (STI) CMP and wafer polishing applications.

“This acquisition helps broaden our strategy of delivering a portfolio of differentiated offerings to our semiconductor customers,” said Wayne Mitchell, vice president and general manager, Electronics, for Air Products. “We will continue to work with our customers to develop new materials and delivery systems for the semiconductor industry that enable next generation devices such as smart phones and tablets.”

The current market for CMP and wafer polishing slurries is valued at more than $1 billion and is growing two times as fast as the underlying semiconductor MSI index, which measures millions of square inches of silicon shipped.

Air Products Expands Supply of Non-Refillable Cylinders
Thursday March 22nd 2012 12:00:00 AM

Air Products is expanding its supply of disposable, non-refillable cylinders to provide a more convenient gas product for use in gas analysis.

While non-refillable gas cylinders have been available to specialty gas users for some time, Air Products has decided to expand its supply of these products in order to meet demand for applications where ease of use and portability are critical.

Switching to non-refillable cylinders for low volume applications allows gas users to avoid rental charges when using smaller volumes of gas and benefit from speedy delivery of a wide range of standardised mixtures. These mixtures have been developed specifically for use in gas detection and other specialist laboratory applications.

Gary Yates, Air Products' European Product Manager Analytical and Laboratories, said: "When it comes to gas detection in areas like personal safety and plant protection, access to stable gas mixtures at short notice is essential and laboratory analysts are demanding a high standard of service from their gas supplier.

"Backed by our pan-European supply network, Air Products is ideally placed to extend this service to specialty gas users in a variety of industry sectors."

Non-refillable gas products are available in a range of aluminium cylinder types, with capacities ranging from 12 litres up to 100 litres and they are supplied with a Certificate of Analysis. Utilising Air Products' extensive cylinder-filling expertise, all reactive mixtures are guaranteed to provide long-term stability and non-reactive mixtures are batch-certified, ensuring consistency with the source gas.

According to Gary Yates, non-refillable gas products can provide much more than just enhanced convenience, they can bring significant safety benefits too. He said:

"The International Safety Equipment Association recommends that gas detection equipment should be 'bump' tested prior to each day of use or before each confined space entry in order to check that sensors and alarms are operating properly. Stable non-refillable gas products that come with a Certificate of Analysis are ideal for this purpose."

Air Products Makes Strategic Acquisition of Xebec’s Adsorption Technology
Thursday March 22nd 2012 12:00:00 AM

Air Products (NYSE: APD) today announced it has acquired advanced adsorption technology assets for its Generated Gases product lines from Xebec Adsorption, Inc. In this acquisition, Air Products purchased the technology, intellectual property and know-how related to structured adsorbents, beaded adsorbents, and rotary valves from Xebec, a publicly-traded Canadian company specializing in adsorption technology headquartered in Blainville, Quebec, Canada. Air Products is not disclosing terms of the acquisition.

“This acquisition will strengthen and differentiate our current offering portfolio and gives us immediate access to this innovative technology,” said Victoria Boyd, general manager, Global Generated Gases at Air Products. “Adsorption process technology is a core competency of Air Products and a key component of our gas generation plants that produce significant revenues. The acquisition moves Air Products’ adsorption technology platform to a unique proprietary position compared to our competitors.” Monty Alger, chief technology officer at Air Products added that, “the technology will allow for smaller footprint plants and higher process efficiencies for customers, along with other sustainability benefits.”

Advanced gas separation technology uses solid phase adsorbents to purify gases. Adsorption systems are part of the front-end pre-purification technology for air separation units (ASU) for water and carbon dioxide removal, hydrogen-carbon monoxide syngas purification, vacuum swing adsorption (VSA) oxygen, and pressure swing adsorption (PSA) nitrogen generation.

“Air Products has achieved very high adsorption unit performance by applying advanced process cycles to systems using traditional adsorbent materials. Examples would be our world class hydrogen business and leading VSA oxygen technology. This technology acquisition also provides an offering foundation to enter new gas clean-up and purification markets,” said Alger.

As part of this technology acquisition, Air Products will acquire more than 100 patents with significant focus on areas directly related to Air Products’ existing business interests. Air Products also has acquired Xebec’s technology center and testing facilities in Burnaby and Surrey, both located in British Columbia.

Terms of the deal also include a grant-back license to allow Xebec to continue to sell its systems, predominantly in the biogas, natural gas and associated gas purification markets.

Air Products to Showcase PolarFit™ Cryogenic Solutions at NPE Expo
Wednesday March 21st 2012 12:00:00 AM

Air Products (NYSE:APD), a recognized leader in cryogenic technology with more than 40 years of experience, will highlight its PolarFit™ cryogenic solutions for grinding, deflashing, process cooling, and inerting at the NPE Expo in Orlando, Fla., from April 1-5. The company’s portfolio of industrial gas-based technologies and process improvement solutions can help manufacturers maximize production rates, minimize costs, and improve product quality, safety, and efficiency.

Among Air Products’ showcased offerings is the PolarFit™ ultra-fine-grinding mill, which cost-effectively reduces hard-to-grind materials to smaller particle sizes than can be achieved with conventional impact mills.

Air Products neemt het Britse CryoService Limited over
Monday March 19th 2012 12:00:00 AM

* A propos du service CryoEase®

Air Products and FuelCell Energy Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Market Tri-Generation Stationary Fuel Cell Power Plants
Wednesday March 14th 2012 12:00:00 AM

  • Tri-generation Direct FuelCell® power plants generate hydrogen, ultra-clean electricity and usable high quality heat at the point of use
  • On-site hydrogen production from stationary fuel cell power plants a way to develop hydrogen infrastructure

LEHIGH VALLEY, Pa. (March 14, 2012) – Air Products (NYSE: APD) and FuelCell Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ: FCEL) a leading manufacturer of ultra-clean, efficient and reliable fuel cell power plants, today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to work toward the market development of stationary Direct FuelCell® (DFC®) power plants that simultaneously produce hydrogen, ultra-clean electricity and usable high quality heat. Target markets for these tri-generation stationary fuel cell power plants include industrial hydrogen users as well as vehicle fueling applications.

“On-site or distributed co-production of hydrogen in a cost effective and efficient manner from stationary fuel cell power plants represents tremendous market potential,” said Ed Kiczek, global director – Hydrogen Energy Systems at Air Products. “Hydrogen is an alternative fuel that can simultaneously reduce a country's dependence on imported oil and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

The initiative seeks to develop a market for tri-generation megawatt-class power plants around the world. Industrial users of hydrogen can utilize all three of the DFC revenue streams including hydrogen, electricity and heat. On-site or local production of hydrogen and electricity eliminates the delivery costs incurred by industrial companies while enhancing security and reliability of supply.

“By combining our industry-leading fuel cell technology and expertise with the market reach, hydrogen processing, and distribution capabilities of Air Products, together we can create the hydrogen infrastructure with a solution that is ready today ,” said Chip Bottone, president and chief executive officer, FuelCell Energy, Inc. “Our stationary fuel cell power plants are quite versatile and this initiative represents what we expect to be an efficient and cost effective manner of providing on-site hydrogen production in an environmentally friendly manner.”

Distributed generation of hydrogen could help to enable hydrogen infrastructure development by producing hydrogen in locations convenient for end-uses such as vehicle fueling or industrial use. Fueling operations or neighboring facilities can utilize the ultra-clean electricity and high quality heat produced. Using DFC power plants to generate hydrogen near the point of use supports domestic jobs while promoting energy independence as DFC plants are designed and manufactured in the United States and utilize abundant natural gas as a fuel source.

Air Products and FuelCell Energy are already working together on a three year hydrogen production project in California, which began in 2011. Under subcontract to Air Products, FuelCell Energy is operating a DFC power plant at an Orange County Sanitation District wastewater treatment facility near Los Angeles. The project, funded in part by the United States Department of Energy, California Air Resources Board, South Coast Air Quality Management District, and also involving the National Fuel Cell Research Center at the University of California, Irvine, is providing renewable hydrogen for vehicle fueling along with ultra-clean electricity. The power plant efficiently converts biogas generated from the wastewater treatment process into renewable hydrogen for a nearby vehicle fueling station operated by Air Products, as well as ultra-clean electricity used by the wastewater treatment facility.

FuelCell Energy manufactures stationary fuel cell power plants that provide continuous baseload power in a highly efficient and environmentally friendly process. DFC power plants are fuel flexible, using readily available fuel sources such as natural gas or renewable biogas. These fuels are converted to hydrogen by the fuel cell process. The electro-chemical power generation process does not utilize all of the hydrogen generated by the fuel cells so the excess hydrogen can be used to meet other demands such as vehicle fueling or industrial purposes. Due to the absence of combustion in the fuel cell power generation process, virtually no pollutants are emitted such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), or particulate matter, resulting in ultra-clean power generation.

Air Products, the leading global supplier of hydrogen to refineries to assist in the production of cleaner burning transportation fuels, has unique experience in the hydrogen fueling industry. These varied fueling applications provide an opportunity to assess consumer experiences, evaluate product performance and advance product improvements. In fact, in certain market applications, fueling rates at several individual sites of over 15,000 refills per year are occurring. The company has placed over 130 hydrogen fueling stations in the United States and 19 countries worldwide. Cars, trucks, vans, buses, scooters, forklifts, locomotives, planes, cell towers, material handling equipment, and even submarines have been fueled with trend-setting technologies that involve Air Products’ know-how, equipment and hydrogen. Use of the company’s technology is increasing and is currently over 370,000 hydrogen fills per year.

Air Products has more than 50 years of hydrogen experience and is on the forefront of hydrogen energy technology development. Air Products has an extensive patent portfolio with over 50 patents in hydrogen dispensing technology. Air Products provides liquid and gaseous hydrogen, and HCNG (hydrogen/compressed natural gas) fueling, and has developed a variety of enabling devices and protocols for fuel dispensing at varied pressures. Hydrogen for these stations can be delivered to a site via truck, produced by natural gas reformation, biomass conversion, or by electrolysis, including electrolysis that is solar and wind driven.
