Oracle Survey Finds that Operational Siloes Hinder Effectiveness of Cloud Applications

Broad Set of Integrated, Cloud Applications Help Organizations Reduce Operational Inefficiencies and Innovation Challenges

Redwood Shores, CA – May 14, 2013

News Summary

Organizations are looking to the cloud to change not only how they buy and consume IT, but also how cloud actually impacts the business. In fact, one of the main drivers for organizations deploying cloud applications is to improve operational agility and effectiveness. To determine if cloud applications are delivering on this promise, Oracle partnered with market research firm Dynamic Markets to survey 1,355 executives from companies across the world with revenues of $65 million or more. The results showed that operational silos are often preventing organizations from realizing the promise of improved business performance and highlighted the need for a broad set of integrated cloud applications.

News Facts

Today Oracle announced the results of a “Cloud for Business Managers: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” report, which found that the majority of businesses around the world have not yet adequately integrated their cloud applications across their business functions. Due to this, many have reported operational inefficiencies and challenges around innovation.
The independent market research report by Dynamic Markets details interviews with 1,355 senior decision makers from businesses globally. Respondents were selected from a wide range of business functions including R&D, Sales/Commerce/E-commerce, Marketing, CRM, Finance and HR.
The report found that:
Over half of respondents (54 percent) say their department has experienced staff downtime in the last six months due to cloud integration problems. In fact, departments not even using cloud apps have been affected by their colleagues that are.
Over half of businesses (52 percent) have suffered from missed deadlines and three quarters of respondents (75 percent) have had their ability to innovate impaired by poor integration of their cloud applications, which has left applications isolated from the rest of their business functions.
This is despite the fact that for the majority of businesses one of the main drivers for deploying cloud applications is to improve operational agility and effectiveness.

Key Findings

The impact of poor cloud integration on business productivity: Over half (54 percent) of businesses stated that their department has experienced staff downtime over the past six months due to cloud application integration problems, with departments not even using cloud applications among those affected. A further 54 percent said project deadlines had been missed in the past six months due to similar problems around the lack of application integration.
Application siloes proving a challenge for innovation: The vast majority (83 percent) of businesses have been prevented from getting the best out of their departmental cloud applications, with one in four blaming poor integration with other applications. Importantly, 75 percent said their ability to innovate using cloud applications has also been hindered, with one in two (53 percent) citing a lack of integration. Being unable to integrate the cloud application with other software owned by the company (36 percent) was highlighted as a particular issue, followed by being unable to customize the cloud application to meet company specific needs (33 percent).
Promise of cloud failing to materialize due to business process siloes: Over three quarters (76 percent) of businesses stated that their motivation behind deploying cloud applications was to get quick access to software, while 47 percent did it to get access to more appropriate software for their department. This contrasts dramatically with the reality of their experience and highlights the importance of getting business processes and applications out of organizational siloes.
Businesses aiming for better application integration: The good news is that the majority of businesses have recognized the need to better integrate business functions and applications. The vast majority (81 percent) of companies stated that it is important that cloud applications are fully integrated with each other and with other software in the organization. While 50 percent claim to have integrated cloud apps where they are able to access cloud data in other departments directly from within their departmental business application, one in two departments are still unable to do this.

Supporting Quote

“Cloud applications have the power to dramatically improve business performance while reducing costs, but only if they can work across the business. For example, sales managers need to have their territory planning and quota management tools integrated with the Human Resource and Compensation applications in order to better drive behavior and achieve sales goals. Subscribing to a cloud service may be relatively straightforward, but how this application fits in with the rest of the enterprise, including on-premise systems and other cloud applications must be thought through,” said Rex Wang, vice president of product marketing, Oracle. “Oracle’s Cloud portfolio has been built with this in mind, enabling us to provide integrated cloud solutions for the whole enterprise. This is a unique capability which means that our customers can source all of their cloud requirements from one place and deliver integrated processes across all their lines of business.”

Columbus State University Implements Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence Environment to Improve Student Retention and Graduation Rates

Oracle Press Release

Columbus State University Implements Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence Environment to Improve Student Retention and Graduation Rates

Top Regional University Gains Real-time Visibility into Student Performance and Engagement with Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition

Redwood Shores, Calif. – May 13, 2013

News Facts

Columbus State University, ranked among the top regional universities in the South by U.S. News & World Report, improved reporting accuracy and timeliness, enhanced data quality and provided insight into student retention, progression and graduation trends with the implementation of Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition.
To conform to Georgia’s “Complete College Georgia” plan, which seeks to increase the number of Georgia’s young adults who obtain a college degree, Columbus State University worked with Oracle Consulting to design and implement a business intelligence and data warehouse solution using Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition and Oracle Data Integrator. With improved reporting accuracy and timeliness, faculty and staff can make more informed decisions, better target troubled students, and enact changes to entice students to stay through graduation.
The new business intelligence environment enables users to pull undergraduate student retention, progression and graduation (RPG) metrics and reports using a real-time dashboard. Faculty and staff can also easily identify patterns and trends characterizing successful students, as well as dropouts, and develop intervention programs for students to improve RPG rates.
With Oracle Data Integrator and Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition, Columbus State University created a single knowledge repository, bringing together the university’s student information system, facility management and PeopleSoft applications. This solution enabled Columbus State University to generate real-time reports that used to take one week or more to produce. University leadership and decision makers now have real-time insight into crucial enrollment data and understand how effective the university is in helping students reach their academic goals.
The university’s new business intelligence environment also integrated information from student surveys into the data warehouse to understand how freshmen are enjoying the overall experience, enabling faculty to pinpoint dissatisfaction areas and proactively intervene to ultimately improve the 29 percent first year student dropout rate.
Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition and Oracle Data Integrator add to the university’s Oracle footprint, which includes Oracle Database and Oracle’s PeopleSoft Financial Management.
Columbus State University implemented phase one of this project—focusing on academic affairs and student performance—over a five month period, on time and on budget. The university just launched phase two, which will add a financial layer to the student data, enabling the university to link retention, progression and graduation data to associated costs and success rates.

Supporting Quotes

"Relationship was a key ingredient in Columbus State University’s decision to choose Oracle. Oracle Consulting worked with our internal resources to deliver a comprehensive data warehouse and business intelligence solution which perfectly meets our needs and will enable our leadership to make valuable decisions related to student retention, progression and graduation." said Abraham George, chief information officer, Columbus State University.
“With Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition’s real-time reporting and accuracy, Columbus State University can bring together student and faculty information and spend more time developing programs and making informed decisions to increase student retention, progression and graduation rates,” said Cole Clark, global vice president, education and research industries, Oracle.

Oracle Press Release

Oracle Optimizes Mobile Access to Campus Business Processes, Improving the Student Experience

Oracle Rolls Out PeopleSoft Campus Solutions Self Service Mobile Functionality

Redwood Shores, Calif. – May 13, 2013

Students today expect immediate, personal, easy access to information they need when they need it—and on their mobile devices. Now, with Oracle’s mobile functionality and platform for PeopleSoft Campus Solutions, higher education institutions can offer an even richer student experience, and they have a more powerful foundation on which to roll out more information and functionality to their end users.

News Facts

Oracle today announced new mobile enhancements to its PeopleSoft Campus Solutions suite that enable students to take action on and manage key processes through a secure smartphone application. The new features will allow institutions to brand, customize and extend the smartphone application to provide maximum value to students through their mobile devices.
The PeopleSoft Campus Solutions mobile features are built on a flexible technology foundation using Oracle Application Development Framework (ADF) Mobile. The framework enables colleges and universities to extend their mobile applications to include websites and other content they want students to access from their mobile devices. Oracle ADF Mobile also enables the use of security features already built into PeopleSoft Campus Solutions, as well as SMS or email delivery of information, such as final grades.
Mobile enhancements available now allow students to use their mobile devices to enroll, add and drop classes; view class schedules, instructors and locations; access grades; receive notifications; search class schedules with filtering options; and monitor academic progress.
The PeopleSoft Campus Solutions mobile enhancements were developed using Oracle’s Continuous Delivery Model, which enables higher education institutions to avoid disruptive major upgrades by delivering periodic application bundles that provide new functionality to meet immediate needs.
Oracle plans additional mobile enhancements for release later this year, including enabling students to integrate calendars, view account balances and financial aid information, view faculty contact information, manage checklists and take action on notifications such as open class seats, access academic history and progress and plan class schedules.
To learn more about the new PeopleSoft Campus Solutions mobile enhancements, join Oracle for the “PeopleSoft Campus Solutions Goes Mobile” webinar on Wednesday, May 22.  The webinar will review the various enhancements that allow students to manage processes and access information and enable institutions to extend the mobile application to include other websites and content.

Supporting Quotes

“With Oracle’s new mobile functionalities for PeopleSoft Campus Solutions, students will have immediate, personal and easy access to information when they need it—and wherever they are,” said Cole Clark, global vice president of education and research, Oracle. “Now, higher education institutions have a choice of mobile platforms and a flexible technology framework with Oracle’s Application Development Framework Mobile, which enables them to roll out more information and functionality, maximizing value for their end users.”

Increases Visibility and Intelligence by Extending Data Access, Expanding Existing Applications and Delivering New In-Memory Analytic Applications

Redwood Shores, Calif. – May 13, 2013

News Facts

Providing organizations with greater insight more quickly, efficiently and enabling lower total cost of ownership, Oracle today announced the general availability of Oracle Business Intelligence (BI) Applications Release 11.1.1.7.1.
Completely redesigned to increase implementation productivity, the new release incorporates significant enhancements across the entire BI Applications product line and introduces new in-memory analytic applications for indirect spend planning and student information analysis.
Leveraging Oracle Data Integrator, Oracle GoldenGate, and new setup and configuration utilities, the applications can be implemented faster, with reduced costs and improved real-time reporting.
Use of new visualizations, improved user interface and significant data access updates allow users to easily interact with analytics to achieve rich insights.
Pre-built for a range of data sources and business applications, Oracle BI Applications deliver intuitive, role-based intelligence to enable better decisions, actions and business processes.
Built on Oracle Business Intelligence Foundation Suite and part of Oracle Business Analytics, Oracle BI Applications enable organizations to reap the value of a best-of-breed, packaged BI solution, while tight integration with a single, common BI architecture allows businesses to easily extend those solutions to meet their specific needs or build completely custom BI applications.

First In-Memory Application for Spend Analysis and Forecasting Helps Customers Optimize Spending

Oracle Indirect Spend Planning, the industry’s first and only in-memory planning application for spend analysis and forecasting, enables procurement and line of business teams to uncover high-opportunity spend reduction areas; monitor and evaluate spend performance; and improve future planning cycles.
By combining powerful what-if analysis and scenario modeling with historical data, users can predict spending amounts and patterns over time to rapidly develop detailed spend plans, enabling them to purchase the right products at the right price from the best sources.
The new application leverages Oracle Essbase server to deliver a rich modeling environment with extremely fast aggregation and calculation. In addition, it integrates directly with Oracle E-Business Suite and Oracle’s PeopleSoft to incorporate established ERP business rules and constraints, allowing for more realistic modeling scenarios and the creation of actionable plans.

New In-Memory Application Enables Academic Institutions to Make Better, More Strategic Decisions

Oracle Student Information Analytics provides academic institutions with best-in-class reporting and analytic capabilities to increase faculty, staff and student productivity; streamline operations and institutional advancement; and ensure student success.
With pre-built analytics tailored to help higher education institutions match up resources with student needs, the new in-memory analytic application enables institutions to maximize student recruiting efforts, shorten time-to-graduation, improve retention rates, identify successful and unsuccessful courses and optimize faculty workloads.
To speed adoption and time-to-value, Oracle Student Information Analytics provides source-specific business adapters for Oracle’s PeopleSoft Campus Solutions and supports third-party solutions through universal adapters.

Enhanced BI Applications Deliver Richer Insights Faster and More Efficiently

Oracle is delivering richer and deeper insight into business applications by incorporating significant functionality across its existing Oracle BI suite of applications.
A new optional pre-packaged solution, that leverages Oracle GoldenGate, virtually eliminates the need for a data extraction batch window and minimizes the impact on the source system, while providing near real-time reporting.
New features in Oracle Financial Analytics deliver front-line managers greater visibility into budgets and assets, helping them monitor and improve financial performance. Enhancements include:
Fixed Assets analysis provide a complete picture of the asset life cycle from acquisition through retirement of both transactions and period value.
Budgetary Control analysis allow managers to monitor budget and spending more effectively, helping easily identify top areas of spending and detect exceptions in timely manner.
Updates to Oracle Human Resources Analytics provide organizations valuable insights to increase workforce productivity and better align pay and performance. New features include:
Time and Labor analysis allows managers to gain insight into hidden causes and costs of overtime, absenteeism and low productivity by reconciling reported time with time posted to projects.
Payroll analysis provides complete information on earnings, deductions and taxes for employees, allowing organizations to view payroll information at a high level, as well as drill down to better analyze compensation, benefits, taxes and overtime. Customers can rapidly source payroll analysis from EBS, PeopleSoft – including PeopleSoft Global Payroll and third-party solutions through the universal adapters.
Workforce Gains and Losses deliver insight into employee headcount across divisions and supervisors over monthly, quarterly and yearly time periods, allowing organizations to monitor and analyze movement.
Oracle Project Analytics have been enhanced with new features that enable project managers and accountants to monitor projects and control the risks that lead to overruns. Updates include:
Resource Management analysis provides project stakeholders with visibility into project requirements, resources, jobs and competencies to monitor utilization trends, identify underperforming organizations and anticipate resource shortages.
Project Subledger Reconciliation aid project accountants in reconciling differences between the subledger and the general ledger for transactions.
Oracle Supply Chain and Order Management Analytics extend insight into inventory levels and costs to promote value chain effectiveness. New features include:
Enhanced Inventory Analysis gives organizations deeper insight into inventory levels, including cycle count, aging, expiration/obsolescence and balance.
Item Cost History Analysis help manufacturers track the historical cost of supply chain-related items.
Oracle Procurement and Spend Analytics now include Sourcing Analysis, which provide increased visibility into corporate spend and complete source-to-pay process with the ability to analyze negotiations, supplier responses and savings opportunities.
By adding support for the Oracle E-Business Suite to Oracle Price Analytics, organizations have a ready means to assess pricing performance, arrest revenue and margin leakage, enabling users to more easily make data-driven pricing decisions.
Additionally, support for the Oracle E-Business Suite in Oracle Service Analytics provides organizations direct access to customer service data, helping them improve the productivity of service centers and increase customer satisfaction.
