May 23, 1868. Contrary to legend, "the grub" at Wells Fargo's overland stage stations could be quite good, according to one letter-writer to a Silver City, Idaho, paper. Rather than dining on such delicacies as skunk stomach stew, fried rats' heads, and boiled chipmunk tails, "Eggs and milk are found on nearly every table, and often juicy venison or antelope steaks," this pleased traveler wrote. "At some of the stations," he continued, "pies made with fresh canned fruit and fresh peach sauce were part of the spread."
