A heat recovery pilot plant installed by Siemens Metals Technologies in the electric steel plant of Stahlwerk Thüringen GmbH in Unterwellenborn (Germany) is now in operation since April 2012. The plant uses molten salt as heat transfer medium, and is connected to the existing exhaust gas system of the electric arc furnace.

Siemens receives its first wind power order in Chile

Siemens has received an order for a total of 50 wind turbines with a combined capacity of 115 megawatts (MW) for the El Arrayán wind power plant in Chile. This wind project will be developed as a joint venture between Pattern Energy and AEI. Furthermore, the mining division of Antofagasta plc, which is the parent company of Minera Los Pelambres, the power offtaker, has purchased an equity stake in the El Arrayán project.

The Siemens Industry Automation Division has added four tubular cell electrolyzer systems to its water disinfection portfolio. The new Osec B-Pak products have an enhanced, compact construction and a newly designed electrolyzer cell. The tubular cell electrolyzer systems from Siemens generate a 0.8 percent sodium hypochlorite solution from water and salt for disinfecting drinking, process and swimming pool water.

Siemens installs drive system worth more than $10 million at steckel mill of SSAB in Montepelier, USA

In late 2011, Siemens commissioned a newly installed drive system at the SSAB Americas' plate and steckel mill in Montpelier, Iowa. The order is valued at more than $10 million and includes two Siemens Sinamics SM150 drive systems and synchronous motors to replace the existing equipment at the mill.

Siemens technology for partial automation of the Athens subway system

Siemens Infrastructure & Cities has been commissioned by Attiko Metro S.A. to provide the technical infrastructure for the 16 kilometer long extension of the subway lines 2 and 3 in Athens. Siemens will supply the signaling technology and components to control the trains electronically. Use of the network can now be optimized through the partial automation of the subway network.
